“The concert is a very unusual event that will feature a PowerPoint slideshow with music, trivia, jokes, riddles and name-that-instrument slides, while the students are being seated,” said P. Bradley Ulrich, professor of trumpet at WCU. “Western students will demonstrate instruments and let the younger students try them out before the concert begins.”
The concert portion of the program will feature the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet and the WCU Faculty Woodwind Quintet. The ensembles will perform and demonstrate the instruments of the brass and woodwind families of the orchestra.
At the end of the program, several visiting students will have the opportunity to conduct these groups as they perform a march together. “The students love to try out the instruments, and it also gives the WCU music students a change to mingle with and instruct the children of our region,” said Ulrich.
“We are very happy that the teachers and administrators in the Jackson County School system believe that arts are important in our community and are supporting our efforts in arts education,” he said. “It is our hope that the band programs in Jackson County will continue to grow with the help of programs such as this one.”
